A hot topic in careers is should employers be able to see exactly what their employees are doing online during the work hours. Many organizations agree that when new and innovative technologies are introduced many people can abuse the affects of internet use and have horrible consequences. One of the more fascinating ideas I have come across is that their are several programs that have been developed through Information Technology that can help businesses and managers monitor their employees internet usage by measuring the bandwidths of their companies. Many employers become frustrated when they see that money and time from the company is being wasted for employees to surf the web and work on their personal projects instead of the tasks at hand.
Many employees argue however that it is an invasion of their privacy in the workplace and that as long as the job is getting done then they should be able to do whatever they wish as long as they are meeting deadlines. This argument is one that will continue to go back and forth for years to come. A recommendation is that employers not be too harsh on employees when addressing this subject either.
What about you? Do you think that companies should monitor their employees internet usage?
Or do you feel as though it is an invasion of privacy to install programs that monitor internet use?

Perhaps Not! Instead of running after the staff monitoring their behavior on internet use, it would be important to have a persuasive and proactive approach.
ReplyDeleteWhen you work for someone you enter in a contract where you sell your time and skills in exchange for some sort of compensation. I believe that employees are entitled to know what you are doing with the time they paid for. In other word the time on the clock is not your time is the time of your employee therefore they have the right to know what you are doing with that time.
ReplyDeleteI believe that companies instead of monitoring what their employees are doing on the internet, which I believe is a little bit of an invasion of privacy even if they are on work time. Instead I think that all employers should just enforce things such as putting locks on certain websites, like they do on campus computers and other business. that way employees will not be able to be on websites they are not suppose to be on during work hours. ReplyDeleteEmployee's should not have the right to do what they want as long as their job gets done. That just means that their job could be done in less time then what is thought necessary. People claim that monitoring employees' Internet activity in violating their privacy. Well don't do private things while you are working. You are getting paid to do a job not handle your personal business.
ReplyDeleteSo everyone who has a job with access to a computer and the internet, I feel use it for personal reasons at some point in time. The question I wonder is are employers really checking their employees computer usage. It just seems like it would be a lot to track a larger companies exact employee computer usage. I feel there should be repercussions for inappropriate sites, but just for the everyday in and out usage I think a company would end up very small if they got rid of everyone who used the internet for personal reasons. I do think if an employee is under performing they could potentially use personal internet usage as a reason to terminate someone.
